Saving Kenyan Economy

April 20, 2008 by walterdeus

After swearing in the largest size of cabinet in modern times, the Kenyan government has to utilize every opportunity to save the economy. With the salary alone of new ministers running in to billions of shillings, the prime minister has to do a lot to show that the government is not bent on making  few individuals rich at the expense of the entire population.

The prime minister’s speech afer being sworn in was very encouraging, he promised that from then, Kenya will not having  a ruling class as it has been since independence. He also promised that, there will never be two centers of power as some people thought but just one center and the center of power will be the people. As Matiba once said, ” Let the people decide”, The PM should let the people decide.

Most importantly, the PM must encourage the MPs to reduce their salary and intoduce taxation on their salary. It’s rediculous to imagine that a kenyan cabinet minister eans $ 16,000.00 amonth, almost twice as much as MPs from developed Countries . Besides this, The Kenyan MPs are not taxed while their counterparts in other countries are taxed. The PM must bring these changes as soon as possible.

Its uncouth for few individuals in Kenya to hold enormous peices of land yet majority of Kenyans are squatters. The PM and the Goevernment must find a way of distributing this land evenly. For instance, Kenyatta’s family own a huge piece of land in the coast yet coast has the most population living as squatters. This land belongs to the coastal people and the Kenyatta as the first president of Kenya grabbed this land for himself.

In central Kenya, the ruling class such as Muchuki’s own about half the land while   the rest of the population are squizzed in the remaining piece of land.

The best way to solve this issue is to introduce heavy property tax on such land as it happens in the US. Such taxation will convince these guys to give such land to people who are in  need. The same tax should also apply to buildings . This will not only earn revenue but also utilize the iddle land owned by a few individuals.

As the PM sits down to start his work, he should do all he can to save our Country as he is our only saviour. He should not that his future elective politics will entirely depend on how he performs at this time. For Kibaki, his political life is over and that’s the reason why he was sleeping in state house when Kenya was on fire and his people were being slaughtered.
