Mbeki an Insult to Zimbabweans

July 6, 2008 by walterdeus

As the political crisis in Zimbabwe deepens, the world must realize that South African President is a serious problem to Zimbabwe. He has no credibility whatsoever to mediate having publicly supported Mugabe against the wishes of the entire world.

The only way to save the escalating situation in Zimbabwe is to first remove South Africa from UN Security Council and replace it with a country that believes in democracy.

Kofi Annan must lead the mediation efforts or any figure with credentials for the job. Such figures may be Kenyan’s prime minister, Botswana’s vice president, Rwanda’s president or anybody with democratic credentials. The person who won the first election must head the legitimate Government. This is the principle of democracy that anybody with sound mind must advocate for.

The South African leader’s behavior in Zimbabwe leaves more questions than answer. People may question the level of democracy in South Africa and the fact that Jacob Nzuma replaced Thabo Mbeki as the leader of governing party says it all. The South Africans must relieve Mbeki of his presidential duties and have Nzuma do the job because he has more world respect than Mugabe like Mbeki.

Mugabe was a clear loser. The AU Leaders’ attempt to patch up a power-sharing deal with Mugabe smacks of utmost hypocrisy and a mockery of democracy.

When will the AU leaders grow up?
