Amnesty Dialogue…Forgive or Not to Forgive!

June 5, 2008 by Poipoi

Amnesty! Amnesty! Amnesty…hell everyone is talking amnesty. Prosecute or not to prosecute I ask? Let us not forget what prompted the violence, who ordered the “shoot to kill” orders that send the Kiganjo boys on a shooting spree in the streets of Kisumu and Kibera slums!

In no way am I condoning the lawlessness that prevailed in the country at the time, but one has to step back and realize these youths were reacting to some politicians ‘selfish’ ambitions to hijack the General Elections! And what is this nonsense about truth and reconciliation commission that some foreign judge from South Africa is spearheading if pople cant be called to confess and/or be forgiven? If we have to call everyone to answer let alone prosecute then we should first start with:

  1. Kivuitu for failing the Electioneering process … that sparked the lawlessness.
  2. “Whoever” ordered the shoot to kill …..that sparked the lawlessness.
  3. The selfish politicians who are now hiding under the umbrella of “Grand Coalition” and some Memorandum of Agreement - yet they failed to call for peace when the Kenyan electorate was being denied the truth.

As famously put “Look around the poker table and ask yourself, ‘who is the sucker?’…if the answer isn’t obvious, the sucker might be you as well!”….the whole amnesty debate is a poker game…guess who are the suckers?

Yes…..Kenyan citizens! If we have to reconcile and put this bitterness behind us, we must borrow a leaf from the Amish people in Pennsylvania that were devastated by the random shooting in a their school where little girls lost their life…the shooter ended up committing suicide after the cops stormed the classroom where the shooting happened…..long story short, the Amish community and more specifically forgave the shooter, and even helped arrange for his burial not counting sharing the donations from the well wishers! Trust me, everyone was stunned that the forgiveness came in almost immediately.

Fast forward, compare and contrast…..we are still debating on calling the people who participated in the electioneering fracas in Kenya yet the Grand Coalition is calling itself a success! Remember during the mediation talks with Annan? Both sides were concerned about the madness that happened and agreed that amnesty was part of the deal…as long as the perpetrators CONFESS i.e. show remorse for their actions…hence the whole thing dubbed “truth and reconciliation”.

Now, this is now blanket amnesty, I could name a group of MPs…. now Ministers in the Coalition who signed the DEAL! The interpretation and misinterpretation of the agreement surrounding “Amnesty” seems a big issue now…why, I don’t know! Is this just another show by our beloved leaders to prove who has bigger balls in the public arena or who has balls to say “Got you sucker!?…Gotta love our politicians!…..
